"I wanted to feel empowered after my divorce." — Chelsea's Story

May 05, 20266 min read

A real client story from our portrait studio in Syracuse, NY.

Some clients walk in with a clear plan. Others walk in with a feeling they can't quite put on a line of an intake form… Chelsea walked in with both.

When we asked her, in our post-session feedback, what made her finally pull the trigger and book she wrote one sentence:

"I wanted to feel empowered after my divorce."

There's a longer version of that sentence. There usually is.

Chelsea spent seven years in a marriage she had to find the strength to leave. She's spoken publicly, since, about what that life was like up close what it asks of a woman, how she finds her way out, and what the years afterward look like when you start putting yourself back together piece by piece. By the time she sat down at our consultation, she'd already done the hardest work a person can do. The kind of work that doesn't fit on an intake form. The kind that takes years off the calendar of who you thought you'd be by now.

So her session wasn't healing, nope, the leaving was the healing. The session was something else: a reintroduction.

This is the story of how that day went.

The Before

She came in honest. Nervous. A little chaotic, in her own words, "a bit chaotic, but we got there lol."

We love that because it tells the truth about what booking a boudoir session actually feels like for most women: exciting, overwhelming, full of small logistical questions and big emotional ones, all of it stuffed into the calendar of a life that doesn't pause to make room for it.

If you've been telling yourself you'll book once everything settles down, I hate to break it to you, but it doesn't settle down. You just decide it's time, and you go.

In the Chair with Nikki

After Nikki finished her makeup with careful contouring and foundation that actually matched her skin, color (she struggled to find before), she came back to Chelsea's hair and, in Chelsea's words, was "sprucing it up." Chelsea came in with her hair already styled the way she loves it in her natural 4c texture. Nikki was able to enhance and work with what was already there, rather than starting from scratch.

What Chelsea told us afterward, totally unprompted, was how much she loved having the right options on the table. Her exact words:

"Loved the options (contour, foundation, color matching) that Nikki has available for darker toned skin."

If you've ever been the woman in a makeup chair watching someone reach for the same three shades of beige they reach for everyone, you already know that's not a small detail.

She rated her hair a 5 out of 5. Her makeup, a 4. We'll take it! (And yes, we're already working on the 4 becoming a 5 in the future!)

In Front of Kelsey's Camera

Kelsey is who Chelsea worked with for the session itself. We're going to print Chelsea's review verbatim, because honestly we couldn't write a better one ourselves:

"She is ahhmazing! A total Bomshell herself and so great at her craft."

What Chelsea didn't write, but what we know from being in the room, is that the first ten minutes of any boudoir session involve a small, quiet negotiation between a woman and her own image. Where do my hands go. Is my chin too high. Does this look ridiculous. Is the lighting making me look like myself, or like someone I don't recognize.

Kelsey's job, more than anything technical, is to be the warmest person in the room while a woman finds the answers to those questions for herself. She's the one telling you you're doing great when you don't believe her yet. She's the one watching for the second your shoulders drop and the camera starts catching the actual you.

On the scale we use, disconnected on one end and empowering on the other, Chelsea rated her experience with Kelsey a 5!!

With Elise at the Reveal

The reveal is its own thing. It's the moment the day becomes real… when you sit down and see, for the first time, the images you made together. We pair every client with our Reveal Specialist for this part, because no one should see herself like this for the first time alone in front of a slideshow.

Her words:

"Really great vibes from Elise. She is spectacular and really knows how to connect with you after you shoot during the reveal."

And when Chelsea saw her images? She said she was absolutely gassed!

Not "I felt pretty." Not "I liked them." Gassed. Lit up. Stunned in the right direction!!

What She Left With

When we asked Chelsea if our team made her feel like the rockstar she is, her answer was this:

"Hell yes, I felt celebrated!"

When we asked what moment made her feel like damn, this is special, she said it was the whole thing, "from makeup, to seeing the scenery in person, to the final reveal."

And the kicker, in her own words:

"I loved this experience from start to finish and can't wait for my round 2!"

She's already planning it!!

If You're Sitting with this Idea

If you found this post by searching boudoir photography Syracuse, we want to say a few things to you, directly.

You don't need to wait until you feel ready. Chelsea was nervous when she walked in. Most women are! Nervous isn't a sign you shouldn't be here, it's a sign you're paying attention to something that matters to you. That’s all.

You don't need to be on the other side of every hard thing. Chelsea wasn't doing this to be healed; she was doing this because she had already done the hardest part, already made it through the chapter that asked the most of her, and she wanted a day that reflected that back to her.

You don't need to have your body figured out. You don't need to lose ten pounds. You don't need to wait for your hair to grow out, or for life to slow down, or for the right time to land in your lap. The right time mostly never lands. You just decide.

And you don't need to know exactly what you want from the experience yet. Chelsea booked because she wanted to feel empowered after her divorce. What she walked out with was a reintroduction to the woman she'd been working her way back to for a long, hard time.
